February is "Senior Support" Month. Senior citizens are our parents and our grandparents, our great aunts and uncles, our teachers, mentors and neighbors. They are people who have contributed to the history of our community and our families in so many ways. They are treasured because of their long accumulated knowledge, wisdom and experience. During this month, the Foundation recognizes the importance of our seniors and is proud to support a variety of organizations that care for, support and uplift seniors in the later years of life.
With more and more medical advancements being made, the number of senior citizens continues to rise. 14.9% of people in the U.S. are seniors.
There are 47.8 million people in the U.S. who are 65 and older (as of July/2015--last stat available).
The poverty rate is higher among senior women (ages 65 and older).
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 1 in 7 peoples (ages 65 and older) have incomes below the poverty threshold.
